What is a citizen petition?

-A A +A

A citizen petition is a way for a resident to put something on the Town Meeting Warrant if it is not addressed through the budget, i.e., paving roads, installing street lights, etc. Citizen petitions require 25 signatures of registered Salem voters per RSA 39:3. Petitions are due in the Town Manager's office on the second (2nd) Tuesday in January.  Although we cannot write the petition for you, the Town Manager's office can help you with developing the language for your citizen petition; however, it is your responsibility to determine the costs, if any, associated with your petition. Sample citizen petition forms are available on the Town's website. Contact the Town Manager's Office at 603-890-2120 for additional information.  With regard to petition articles for zoning amendments, please contact Ross Moldoff at 603-890-2083 for information.
