Recreation  »  Help Out  »  Junior Leader Program

For Summer Playground Applicants:

Please review, complete and return the employment application to the Recreation Department by the last Friday in March. The application must be accompanied by two (2) letters of recommendation from anyone other than family (i.e. teachers, employers, advisors, neighbors, coaches, etc.). You and your parents are responsible for all information contained herein.

The Junior Leader program is geared towards students entering grades 8 & 9 or is in their early teens. The purpose of the program is to expose these individuals to the playground/camp environment and teach them about leadership, responsibility and working with others. Parents are responsible for transportation of all Jr. Leaders each day. The Playground Director will be assigned to direct and assist the group of Jr. Leaders along with the Recreation Director.

Some of the activities that will be part of this program may include:
  • Assisting the playground staff in running and organizing the camp activities, including sports, games, crafts and special events.
  • As a group, organizing and running special events for the playground children.
  • Taking part in Jr. Leader recreational activities and events.
This program is entirely a volunteer program. The applicant MUST make an 80% time commitment to the eight (8) week program (22 hours per week) and attend the training week prior to the start of the camp as directed by the Recreation Director. We expect notification of any missing days/hours in advance of the start of the entire program. Hours worked with this program can be used towards community service requirement in high school. It is the responsibility of the student to provide Parks and Recreation with necessary forms.

Some fees may be charged for certain trips taken by the group. Trips are optional. Jr. Leaders are expected to bring their own lunch/drinks daily. Each leader is responsible for any and all personal property. We suggest that you come prepared with appropriate dress at all times.

All Jr. Leaders must return a completed emergency medical card (to be distributed during training week) and a NH Youth Employment Certificate. A form (Employer's Request for Child Labor) is attached to apply for the Certificate. The student should complete the top half of the form and the Recreation Director must sign the bottom half before you can bring it to the school. You must bring this to the school office with a copy of your birth certificate. Bring this form to the school you will be entering in the fall. Our office must receive a NH Youth Employment Certificate before any student can enter the program. This form is required by State law for any Jr. Leader to volunteer (non-paid) for this position.

Due to the popularity of the program, the nature of the work involved and the need for supervision, the enrollment must be limited to approximately 10 students. Selections are based on numerous criteria (it is not first come, first serve). Applicants will be selected based on past experience working with children, person and community recommendations, personal interview with the Recreation Director and/or Playground/Jr. Leader supervisor(s) and other recreation related experiences and/or volunteer work. An applicant may be dismissed from the program at any time at the discretion of the Director.

All selections will be made at least two (2) weeks prior to the start of the eight (8) week program, in early June and the program ends in mid-August. Camp hours are 9:00am to 12:30pm, Monday thru Thursday. Applicants should be available to attend a group meeting in June, a scheduled interview and be available to work the length of the summer camp as well as a few hours during the training week (a week prior to the start of camp).
