Fire Department  »  Fire Prevention - Public Education

The Fire Prevention Division operates under the authority of Town Ordinance 187, which establishes a "Bureau of Fire Prevention."

The Fire Prevention Division has four main functional areas:
  1. Fire Prevention
  2. Fire Investigation
  3. Fire Safety Education
  4. Code Enforcement
The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for all plan reviews (new construction and existing remodels), all construction, final inspections for Certificate of Occupancy, fire alarm and sprinkler system inspections and conducting inspections in existing buildings. A copy of our Automatic Sprinkler Regulations and Fire Alarm Regulations can be found here. The Town has adopted the 2000 Edition of the International Fire Code and the 2003 Editions of the National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and the Fire Prevention Code (NFPA 1). In addition, we have our own Fire Code (187) and Life Safety Code (216).

The Fire Prevention Division determines the cause and origin of fires occurring within the community on request of the Incident Commander. The Division, as well as detectives from the Salem Police Department and occasionally the NH Fire Marshal's Office investigates all suspicious fires.

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for the Town's Public Fire Education Program. If you have a group that you would like a fire official to speak to, please contact Debra Scafidi at (603) 890-2209 or by e-mail.
