The Salem Fire Department was established on May 13, 1905 and
consisted of 18 volunteers. At that time, the population was approximately 2,100.
Over the past 95 years, the Town of Salem has grown and changed into
a small metropolis known for its large commercial and retail industry as
well as its growing residential population. As of the 2000 census,
Salem hosted a population of 28,000 with a daytime population estimate
of over 80,000.
As the Town has changed, the Fire Department has changed with it. Now
in the 21st Century, the Salem Fire Department employs 67
men and women dedicated to protecting the Town 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year. The Department no longer provides only fire suppression services,
but we now also respond to medical aids, hazardous materials incidents, specialized
technical rescue situations, fire prevention/inspection requests and disaster incidents.
Major changes in the past decade have vaulted the fire service forward, and
the Salem Fire Department as well. We now provide the community with
paramedics on medical emergencies. These cross-trained firefighters are able
to provide life saving techniques including emergency medication administration,
advanced airway management, advanced cardiac monitoring (including 12 lead
EKG's) and many other services once only found in a hospital-now in
your living room. We now also operate under the Incident Command
System. This system is a national standard which allows a command
officer to maintain command and control of an incident, no matter
what its size and magnitude. The incident commander can oversee
operations, ensure firefighter and civilian safety and provide the most
safe and effective service to the community. Other changes in the past
decade include upgrades to firefighter protective equipment, changes in
the fleet and perhaps the newest and most advanced piece of equipment,
the thermal imaging camera.
Our motto has always been and will continue to be, "if you call
the Fire Department with a problem, we will do everything we can to
help you." We hope you enjoy browsing our site and learning about
our Department.
