HOW DO I GET A BUILDING PERMIT?

Come into the building department at 33 Geremonty Drive.  You can pick up an application anytime during the day.  However, permits will only be issued during "counter hours" of 8:30-9:30am and 4:00-5:00pm.

I WANT TO BUILD A HOUSE. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO?

During "counter hours" of 8:30-9:30am and 4:00-5:00pm, you will bring a completed application and building plans to the building department.  Building Inspector Mike DiBartolomeo will review the plans regarding codes, regulations and zoning.  The application and plans are submitted to Fire, Planning and Engineering Departments for their approvals.  Once the application is complete, you will be contacted to come in to pay and pick up your permit.

WHEN DO I NEED A BUILDING PERMIT?

You need to obtain a building permit for new construction or altering existing construction. Additions, finishing an attic or basement, or changing interior walls are examples of alterations that require a building permit.  You generally do not have to obtain a building permit to replace windows or doors, as long as they maintain the same dimensions. The following type of work often needs a building permit:

    • New construction                                                            Alteration of an existing building
    • An addition to an existing building                                     Change in sue of an existing building
    • Cutting of part or all of a wall or partition                           Work affecting structural or fire safety
    • Work that affects public health or safety                            New occupant in commercial buildings
    • Removal or change of any required means of egress           Demolish or moving a strucure
    • Removal or cutting of any structural beam or bearing support
    • Work that increases the non conformity of an existing building

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A PERMIT?

Most permits will be issued upon receipt of the application. Commercial permits and new construction usually take 2-3 weeks to review before a permit is ready for pick-up

COST OF PERMIT?

Many different fees apply depending upon what permit you are applying for. Please contact the Building Department for further information.

HOW MAY SETS OF PLANS ARE NEEDED WHEN REQUESTING A BUILDING PERMIT?

Three sets of plans are needed.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS OF OPERATION?

The inspectors are available to review and issue permits during "counter hours" Monday through Friday 8:30-9:30am and 4:00-5:00pm. 

IS A PERMIT NEEDED FOR ROOFING, WINDOWS, SIDING? 

Yes, for commercial properties.  Usually no for residential, but there are exceptions.  Please call the Building Department for clarification.

WHAT ARE THE DATES OF ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT MEETINGS?

The first Tuesday of every month.  You will need to meet with Sam Zannini for your paperwork.  Deadline for applications is approximately 2 1/2 weeks prior to the meeting.

WHAT INFORMATION IS NEEDED TO RECEIVED A BUILDING PERMIT?

1. Who is the contractor doing the work?
2. What work is going to be done (exactly)?
3. Sketches, drawings, dimensions, plans, size, type of construction (ie 2x8, etc)?

If work is outside of the structure, what will the proposed set-backs be from lot lines?

HOW DO I ARRANGE FOR AN INSPECTION?

Call the Building Department 603-890-2020. You will be able to schedule an inspection for 24 hours after your call. You will need the permit number to process your inspection request.  Make sure your site is ready for inspection as a re-inspection fee will be charged to anyone who isn’t ready.
